Janie Coffey, Director of Sales and Brand Experience at One Sothebys International, has recently become a board member of the Lotus House, a Miami-based non-profit that helps homeless women rebuild their lives. The Lotus House is part of One Sothebys ONE for ONE fundraising initiative. The Lotus House is more than just a temporary place to eat, sleep and shower. The sanctuary, located in the impoverished community of Overtown, offers healthcare, counseling, fitness activities, education and other services that contribute to well-being and self-confidence.
Women who enter the program some pregnant or with children -- have suffered from domestic violence, poverty, disability and untreated medical or mental illness. The home was named after the lotus flower, a symbol of compassion, hope and enlightenment. True to its namesake, Lotus House graduates move on to support themselves and breakthrough to a better life. I was on the original board between 2005 and 2006, said Coffey over a phone interview. And I joined again in 2013. I wanted to get more involved with the great things Lotus House is doing for women and children in need.
The Lotus House operates a thrift shop, now managed by one of its graduates. I look forward to helping with that aspect of operations, said Coffey. Although the Lotus House benefits from an endowment fund established in 2007, the program needs continual support. Daily operation and capital funds are critical, noted Coffey.

The thrift shop is just one aspect of operations for this Miami non-profit.
