Federal Donuts, a pioneer of the nationwide gourmet donut and fried chicken craze, opened its first branch outside its hometown of Philadelphia. Located in Wynwood, the casual eatery offers some booths and a counter to inhale its signature delicacy. Select donuts from a rotating menu divided between hot fresh, which are fried and tossed in house-blended sugars, or fancy with daily glazes like chocolate clair or poppy seed-speckled guava. Partner Steven Cooks favorite? An old standby, naturallycinnamon brown sugar. Order these hot sweets by the single, half dozen and dozen. Half and whole twice-fried chicken comes with a honey donut and choice of dry seasoning (zaatar, coconut curry) or glaze (chili garlic, honey ginger). The chicken sandwich with American cheese, dill pickles and spicy sauce begs for a bite, too.

MIAMI MODO
Adding to Sunset Harbours crowded yoga studio scene, Modo specializes in hot yoga. But its teachings go beyond the mat. A combination of therapeutic and traditional yoga practices, the newcomer is part of a worldwide yoga collective that promotes social and environmental enlightenment and initiatives. Try its signature hatha-based Modo series or Modo Flow, an invigorating spin on vinyasa. Co-founders Michelle Critch-Gilfillan and Cleo Vo-Dai have ties to Montreal. Critch-Gilfillan taught at Pure Yoga and Modo Yoga in New York, while Vo-Dai began practicing yoga in college. Theyre offering generous introduction incentives: Sign up for 30 days of unlimited classes for $40, or a lifetime membership for $5,000. Another option is volunteering through their Energy Exchange program to receive classes and discounts on retail items and workshops.

Pod 22 came along just in time for frazzled parents during summer break. Designed with adults and children in mind, the clever hybrid houses a nail salon, coffee and WiFi lounge, and indoor playground, which can be booked for kids birthday parties, all under one roof. While kids run around, parents are pampered with express, classic, spa and deluxe manicures and pedicures. More in-depth treatments like reflexology, aromatherapy and gel manicures are also available. They welcome kids to have their nails painted with Zoya eco polishes, part of the spa birthday party package among several packages. Supervisors play with kids so parents can truly relax, and vending machines serve healthy snacks. The urban break room also schedules Mommy & Me, art and yoga classes.

SETTING A STANDARD

The Standard Spa is hosting dinners with out-of-town toques, and all proceeds go to the charity of each guest chefs choice.
