TOBA IN TOWN

When Toba Khedooris self-titled exhibit opened at PAMM last week, it quickly became the talk of the town. PAMM director Franklin Sirmans curated the largest survey of her works, which premiered at his former institution, LACMA in Los Angeles, where the Aussie artist has lived since 1990. On view through September 24, 2017, the presentation adds two paintings that have never been shown at a museum and that mark the introduction of the figure into her oeuvre. Nearly 30 works are also displayed in reverse from the original show, so from the most recent to the earliest, which tend to be intimate works on canvas and large scale works on paper, respectively. Themes explore architecture and negative space like Untitled (buildings/windows), this 1994 oil and wax work on paper.

RETREAT REVS UP

Athleisure is everywhere these days. Funkshion debuts the Retreat, an experiential pop up dedicated to the apparel category, from May 3-7. Touted as the first event of its kind, the exclusive showcase for influencers combines fashion presentations, wellness seminars and fitness classes in various venues throughout Miami. Designers from participating brands such as Aviator Nation, Luli Fit by Luli Fama and Ultracor (pictured) will make guest appearances following their shows, most of which occur at Soho Beach House. Collections will also be available throughout the week at the onsite pop-up shop. If you cant make it, score the latest athleisure at Restless Soul, an Aventura boutique that expanded to South Miami. Alo Yoga, Splits59, Blanc Noir, Koral and Prismsport are just a handful of the featured lines.

ZUCCA & BRAVA

Hotel St. Michel launched a new casual eatery for Italian fare. Zucca, the first U.S. venture from a Venezuelan restaurant group, occupies a new contemporary setting in the Coral Gables property. Italians love their aperitifs, so begin at the white marble-topped bar with specialty cocktails like Nonnas Mule with grappa and grapefruit soda and a charcuterie board of pecorino, mortadella and other nibbles. Ricotta-stuffed zucchini blossoms with anchovies also are good to share. Move on to a 32-oz. T-bone for two with primi piatti of spaghetti and Sardinian bottarga. Vegetarians can try ravioli with artichokes and gnocchi with eggplant and burrata. Brava chef Brad Kilgore hosts the Gold Celebration Tour with the winner of the Bocuse dOr culinary competition and bites by local restaurants at the Arsht Center on May 7.
