Miami has held various fashion weeks for a while, and now its Fort Lauderdales turn. The citys inaugural Underground Lauderdale Fashion Weekend kicks off tonight with a bash at Ritz-Carltons Burlock Coast restaurant. Nina Garcia of Project Runway fame hosts a fashion show for Nicole Millers Spring 2017 collection with a sneak peek of her summer styles at FATVillage Arts District (523 NW First Avenue) on Friday from 9-11 p.m. Emerging designers step into the spotlight during a see-now, buy-now showcase on April 1, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Though South Florida designers are represented, most of them hail from New York, including Saunder (pictured), Descendant of Thieves and Alice & Trixie. Think youre too busy to meditate? Theres no excuse now that Miami Beach claims a drop-in meditation studio right off Lincoln Road. MEDICAL MISSIONS
Stars in the sport and fashion worlds are visiting Miami for medical charities. NBA player Brian Grant whose namesake foundation fights Parkinsons disease, which he was diagnosed with in his thirties, hosts Shake It Till We Make It at the Moore Building (191 NE 40th Street) in the Miami Design District on April 1. Enjoy food stations and a fashion show as DJ Saint Chills tunes hopefully inspire you to shake it. Elegant grande dame Carolina Herrera heads to Prez Art Museum Miami (1103 Biscayne Boulevard) for FundaHigado America Foundations second annual fundraiser on April 6. Proceeds benefit pediatric liver transplants in underserved regions in Latin America through education and medical centers. Attendees will be treated to a photography exhibit depicting the teams work and a cocktail reception.
