The Miami Design District will pay tribute to the late, great Frei Otto when a Shigeru Bandesigned replica of one of Ottos famous designs moves into the neighborhood in December. When German-born Otto passed away before the awards ceremonyheld earlier this year in Miami2014 laureate Shigeru Ban stepped in for one last collaboration with his dear friend. Channeling the circa-1955 tent Otto created as a music pavilion for the Federal Garden Exhibition in Germany, Ban erected a replica outside the New World Center, welcoming guests to the event and celebrating the nights top honoree. The four-point tensile tent is a prime example of Ottos use of lightweight materials that make a minimal impact on the environment. Bans public installation traveled north for the Chicago Biennial before arriving back in Miami.
