The Scoop - Art Basel Edition

Tony Awards

No stranger to fashion partnerships, local gallerist Anthony Spinello teams up with Gucci for Smell The Magic, a pop-up satellite exhibit in the Design District for his Spinello Projects. Toronto painter Kris Knights gender-bending, pastel portraits of youth on the verge of adulthood caught the eye of Guccis creative director, who referenced and collaborated with him this year. Check it out through December 15, though the pop-up remains for a while with more exhibits. Eschewing fairs this year, Spinello also produces Auto Body, an all-female group show for performance and video art curated by 25 women at the former Giant Motors body shop in Sunset Harbour from December 4-7.

Vive L'eve

Tuesday, the eve of Art Basel Miami Beachs VIP-only vernissage (the fair opens to the public on Thursday this year), is going to require some serious stamina. No one will go hungry with dinners such as NY Times International Luxury Conference (which ends tomorrow at Mandarin Oriental Miami) at PAMM, Louis Vuitton at the YoungArts campus, W magazine at Edition and Gagosian Gallerys Mr. Chow spread for One Way: Peter Marino at the Bass Museum of Art (shown here), whose VIP opening is tomorrow night. London-based White Cubes annual blowout at Soho Beach House packs in the gallery glitterati. ICA Miami, which just announced an official museum in 2016 thanks to the Bramans and Craig Robins, hosts its temporary spaces reception featuring music by Twin Shadow and Prince Rama.

Dance Arty

ABMB director Marc Spiegler is particularly excited for the fairs presentation of contemporary artist Ryan McNamaras MEEM 4 Miami: A Story Ballet About the Internet, a new and expanded version of his commission for the Performa 13 biennial (shown here). The audience-immersive, multi-genre dance performance is set to jazz and classical remixes and explores how people share online content. Tickets are available for shows on December 3 and 4 through Miami Grand Theater at Castle Beach Resort. The Chinese choreographer who blew away audiences with his 2008 Beijing Olympics opening ceremonies brings his talents to Miami in Shen WeiIn Black, White & Grey, an exhibit combining his first-ever viewing of large-scale paintings and site-specific performances by his dance troupe on December 5-7, at the Freedom Tower.

Dashing Decor

Theres far more design beyond DesignMiami/ fair, which opens tonight. Bally presents Triangle Walks, a restoration of a 70-year-old modern masterpiece by French designer Jean Prouv that houses 3-D virtual objets by French duo Kolkoz and repurposed metal sculptures by Brooklyn artist Zak Kitnick in the Delanos orchard on December 4-7. Louis Vuitton always has a surprise in store for Basel. This year, it focuses on its new digs in the Design District with Playing with Shapes: Pierre Paulin, 1972 at a nearby, third-floor exhibition space in the neighborhoods Palm Court through Dec. 7. The house has recreated 18 one-off pieces of groovy modular furniture (origami-inspired, low-level seating, curvy aubergine sofa) by Pierre Paulin that he originally envisioned for American furniture manufacturer Herman Miller. Lucky for collectors, each is for sale.
