The Sony Open Tennis takes place in just a few weeks and is a reminder of South Floridas love for the international tennis community. The tournament is known as the "fifth slam" after Wimbledon, the U.S. Open, French Open and Australian Open. Last year, the Sony Ericsson Open set an all-time attendance record for the fifth time in six years with 326,131 guests.
Visitors came from all over the world, booking more than 14,700 room nights directly through the tournament, which also received 73.5 hours of domestic television coverage. 2012 was a banner year for other reasons as well:
- The tournament rebranded as Sony Open Tennis
- The Tennis Center at Crandon Park received a $1 million dollar renovation for the player areas inside the stadium
- A majority of local voters approved a referendum on the November 6 ballot that allowed for a $50 million renovation of the facilities funded by private money and tournament proceeds
- The 2013 edition of the tournament will take place March 18-31. Visit Sony Open for more information
