The Scoop: Weekend of December 8th

UPPING THE GAME

Follow the warm, inviting glow to Upland, Stephen Starrs new brasserie for California cuisine in South of Fifth. Inside its yellow and green dining room, shelves are abundantly stocked with lemon and artichoke preserves, and humble meadow blooms burst from galvanized wash tubs. The farmhouse feel readies diners for chef Justin Smillies wood-fired salmon with farro salad and eggplant with Israeli yogurt atop tomato pure. Vibrantly fresh vegetables and herbs are arranged like miniature fields on rustic plates. Hits are hen-of-the-woods mushrooms with Cloumage, a creamy cows milk cheese, and homemade pappardelle with sausage rag and kale. The concept, whose original location is in New York, borrows its name from the agricultural community in southern California where Smillie grew up.

PARIS PERFECT

The iconic Parisian fashion house Saint Laurent expanded its Miami footprint with a second store in the Design District. The 4,200-square-foot, two-story layout displays mens and womens ready to wear, accessories, shoes and jewelry. Fans of the label are thrilled to find limited-edition pieces from Anthony Vaccarellos inaugural collection, Spring 2017, since succeeding Hedi Slimane as creative director. The abundance of black leather emulates the Eighties gritty opulence. Vaccarello and W magazine editor Stefano Tonchi hosted a grand opening party for Art Basel with guests like Martha Stewart, Larry Gagosian and Charlotte Gainsbourg. Store dcor follows the prototypes nod to French Art Deco through white and black marble floors, polished brass fixtures, and nickel-plated seating. Vintage furniture by European designers completes the elegant setting.

In the meantime, Mark Cuban and Todd Wagners Landmark Theatres officially launches its first Florida location in the Shops at Merrick Park next week. Sophisticated stone and wood finishes, Dolby 7.1 surround sound, and leather stadium seating, which may be reserved online for the best view in the house, enhance the moviegoing experience on seven screens. In addition to all the classic concessions, load up on hip fare and refreshments at the full bar. Besides picking up gift certificates for last-minute holiday shopping, film buffs can treat themselves to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Lucasfilms first standalone feature within the brand.
