Sotheby’s Celebrates 275 Years of Innovation and Reinvention

“Art is an obsession with life.”

Since 1744 Sotheby’s has been known for remodeling the art world – uniting collectors with world-class works of art from the world’s most recognized names. Hundreds of auctions have featured rare gemstones, watches, cars, manuscripts and works from artists of every style, taking place around the world throughout the years put on by Sotheby’s. The brand’s 275th anniversary provides us with a unique opportunity to celebrate some of the spectacular moments over their history of reinvention, imagination and market strength.

Banksy used the sale of his Girl with Balloon to make history, shredding the canvas just moments after it sold causing a stir in the art world and creating a brand new piece. Celebrities such as Victoria Beckham have collaborated with the auction house to curate collections for display and auction. There have been auctions celebrating great collectors including David Bowie and Brooke Astor, and auctions that benefitted important charities such as (RED).

Always striving to improve and grow, Sotheby’s has ingratiated themselves into the luxury world with continued initiatives and achievements, such as in the foundation of two retail businesses – Sotheby’s Diamonds and Sotheby’s Wine – and the recent acquisition of internationally renowned businesses, such as our collection advisory subsidiary Art Agency, Partners and Orion Analytical, experts in forensic art-authentication matters.

ONE Sotheby’s International Realty is proud to be part of a dynamic and iconic brand.
