The Scoop: Weekend of July 20th

WEBSTER WEEKEND

The Webster doesn’t skip a beat in summer. The luxury emporium hosts a trunk show for Maor, a new fine jewelry line by Israeli designer Maor Cohen, on July 22. Unisex, minimal pieces, which start at $700, feature several hues of 18K gold, as well as white and black diamonds. Their galaxy-inspired names (Solstice, Tilted Axis) convey deeper meaning. Jewelry fans may already be familiar with the Los Angeles-based resident’s first line, M. Cohen. Premium denim brand Agolde collaborates with hip-hop singer A$AP Ferg on a second capsule collection. Preview Fall 2017’s denim, such as a skinny jean and straight-leg cuts, tees and tracksuits with custom graphics depicting his personal journey. Need something sweet? Photographer Gray Malin’s limited-edition boxes are filled with Ladurée macarons in seasonal flavors.

PIAF TO PERFECTION

Édith Piaf, “the little sparrow,” flies into town for the U.S. premiere of a new biographical musical. The French chanteuse who made a name for herself in cabarets around Paris is the tragic yet brilliant subject of Venezuelan writer Leonardo Padrón’s script, simply titled “Piaf.” The hit sold out for two seasons in Caracas before traveling here courtesy of Miami New Drama (MiND) at Colony Theatre. Venezuelan actress and musical star Mariaca Semprún (cast in the 2016 film Bird Songs from Amazonia) takes on the challenging role in alternating English and Spanish performances but singing Piaf’s legendary songs—18 total—in their original French. Tonight’s debut kicks off the summer season and appointment of MiND’s new executive director, Florencia Jimenez-Marcos. Performances run Thursday-Sunday through July 30.

HEALTHY HANGOUT

Miami is on a major veggie kick these days. Last week, we featured Todd Erickson’s new vegan eatery, GLAM, on the mainland. Now Soul Tavern, the city’s first vegetarian gastro-pub, comes to South Beach’s Sunset Harbour. Its founder, a Chinese medicine practitioner and acupuncturist, based the menu on the ancient Chinese theory of the five elements—wood, fire, earth, metal and water—to balance health. They appear as themed salads, such as Earth’s mix of chickpeas, pickled squash, ginger and corn with mulberry maple hibiscus dressing. He custom makes dozens of Chinese herbal elixirs to help with specific ailments; they may be added to a variety of hot and cold beverages. But being a pub, there’s also a full bar from kombucha cocktails to pinot noir on tap.
