Searching for a gala gown that will stand out from the same old designers? How about one covered in ruby red lips or an entire couture collection inspired by Macondo, the fictional town in Gabriel García Márquez’s masterpiece, “One Hundred Years of Solitude?” They are among the chic creations at Colombian designer Silvia Tcherassi’s new atelier exclusively devoted to eveningwear and bridal across the street from her ready-to-wear boutique in the Shops at Merrick Park. A marvel with texture, Tcherassi works with silk Neoprene, lace, tulle, silk organza and every embellishment. Shelves showcase her signature mochilas bedazzled with Swarovski crystals, which she demonstrated how to make on Martha Stewart’s TV show. Sketching in her office in back, she’s available by appointment to style clients for any special occasion.
Two important sporting events are happening in Miami this weekend. Thoroughbred race horses compete for the inaugural $12 million purse in the Pegasus World Cup Invitational at Gulfstream Park on Saturday, at 5:30 p.m. Following several races beginning at 10 a.m., the final event outdoes the Dubai World Cup’s $10 million winnings, making it the richest thoroughbred race in history. Don elegant daytime attire, or catch it at home on NBC. Techies will also be impressed by its premiere of gambling technology where fashion and music come into the fold. The 28th Sailing World Cup Miami, U.S. Sailing’s main event and the only to bring an Olympic-level regatta to North America within the series, continues through January 29. Be in the center of the action at Regatta Park.
Spas are stepping up their game. The five-star-five-diamond Acqualina Spa by ESPA unveiled its opulent, 820-square-foot Royal Spa Suite (pictured). Luxury Italian décor, from a crystal chandelier to Fendi Casa’s buffet console for tea service and Audrey swivel chairs, sets it apart from other treatment rooms. Guests can steam in their own mother-of-pearl room, and relax on a private terrace and in comfy mani/pedi chairs. Built for couples and groups, it also features a rainforest shower and treatment beds for two. (The Royal Package, which adds a three-night stay in an oceanfront suite and bottle of Cristal with gold-dipped strawberries, makes a perfect Valentine’s Day gift.) Turnberry Isle Resort introduced âme, a wellness center for 95 fitness classes, nutrition consultations and custom treatments like color therapy and amethyst crystal massages.
