Although incorporated in 1986, Downtown has gone through its most recent rebirth since 2000, when many thousands of residential condominium units were added to the already bustling commercial skyline. Population of Greater Downtown now includes close to 200,000 residents, making Miami now one of the most populated city centers in the United States just behind New York and Chicago.
Along with the Brickell Corridor, Downtown serves as a major international place of business hosting multi-national corporations and has long been considered the gateway to Latin America. The Central business district also hosts one of the oldest shopping areas along Flagler Street and is also home to the relatively new, Bayside marketplace.
Residents enjoy concerts in Bayfront Park and a myriad of cultural activities at the Adrienne Arsht Center. Public transportation on the Metrorail makes getting around Downtown fairly easy.
