Buildings That Changed Miami: New World Center in Miami Beach

Frank Gehry’s architectural style inside the New World Center, which greets guests in a vast, sun-lit atrium.

This past Sunday, PBS aired a special entitled The 10 Buildings That Changed America, which highlighted pioneering ventures in residential, commercial and industrial architecture in the United States from as early as Thomas Jefferson’s design of the Virginia State Capitol in 1788 to as late as the Walt Disney Concert Hall, completed in 2003 in Los Angeles by Frank Gehry.

Miami has its own share of architecturally noteworthy buildings, homes, landmarks, botanic gardens and public sculptures, including a one-of-a-kind Frank Gehry building on Miami Beach — the New World Center.

The New World Center is home to the New World Symphony, America’s only orchestral academy, where top music school graduates hone their skills while on their way to becoming orchestra musicians, all under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas and many noted leaders in classical music.

Though the building’s glass and white plaster exterior is rectangular and relatively unassuming — very much unlike the trademark sweeping sails of the Los Angeles music hall or the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao — the interior features an expansive, sun-lit atrium and the cavernous halls and curves that are a trademark of the Gehry style.

As well, a masterful design by Japanese acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota ensures that sound travels beautifully in the concert hall, which is flanked by curved video projection walls that provide visual enhancements to the music that’s performed in the 756-seat venue.

Inside the concert hall, a video-enhanced performance of a Stravinsky composition, digitally mastered by engineers in a control room behind the audience.

There are also some additional unique features to this Miami Beach building that go beyond a traditional concert hall.

For one, its high tech wiring: thousands of miles of cables make this a high-end Internet2 hub, where orchestra fellows can train virtually with coaches in other cities without loss of sound quality.

nws-wallcast-miami-beach

Miamians and tourists alike enjoy outdoor WALLCAST concerts in season. The sound quality is superb in the musical “garden.”

But it doesn’t just end there. The building offers WALLCAST concerts, projected on a 7,000 foot wall on the façade, which faces the SoundScape area — a 2.5 acre park designed by the Dutch urban and design landscape firm West 8. It’s here Miamians and tourists alike enjoy free live broadcasts of the music being performed inside the hall, while picnicking around an esplanade of pergolas providing support for tropical blooming vines such as bougainvillea.

In a statement, Frank Gehry spoke of his thoughts on the structure:

“I am very proud of this building, which results from a close working relationship with my lifelong friend Michael Tilson Thomas and brings to life his dream for New World Symphony and the entire world of classical music. I hope the spirit of creative engagement that Michael and I have enjoyed will live on in the building’s spaces. They are designed to encourage young musicians, their mentors and their audiences to try new things, interact in new ways and remain open to new experiences.”

The New World Symphony once called the quaint art deco Lincoln Theatre on Lincoln Road its home, but moved just across the street to create a cutting-edge, digital technology educational and cultural institution in the heart of South Beach. The New World Center is definitely one of many buildings that have changed Miami.

Numerous Miami Beach properties are close to this iconic building.

Aspen Meets Miami at Viceroy To Show Ski Lifestyle

snowmass-viceroy-residences

A change of scenery: The Residences at Viceroy Snowmass boast interior design with details in crystalline glass and recycled timber for a sophisticated yet rustic ambience.

While we’ve got lush tropical landscapes and breathtaking ocean views in South Florida, every winter many Miamians flock up north or out west to enjoy snow and mountains. It’s a different kind of snowbird; Miamians also want a change of scenery sometimes and to experience the thrills of a ski and apres-ski lifestyle.

Step in The Residences at Viceroy Snowmass, a sister property to Miami’s famed Viceroy Hotel, which also boasts residences at The Icon Brickell — both properties developed by The Related Group.

On Friday, April 26, at the ebb of ski season, Aspen came to Miami for some tropical sunshine as agents from Aspen Snowmass Sotheby’s International Realty collaborated with One Sotheby’s International Realty Founder and CEO Mayi de la Vega to announce the launch of whole ownership residences at Viceroy Snowmass.

The cocktail party took place at the Fireplace Terrace at Viceroy Miami, which is the common area inspired by Yoo by Philipe Starck.  Agents from both cities gathered to share information about the Aspen property, where just like in Miami, residents enjoy the convenience of resort-style living.

Aspen met Miami on April 26.

At The Residences, snow lovers can take advantage of adjacent slopes with ski in, ski out privileges in four acclaimed ski spots — Snowmass, Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk, with access to 5,000 acres of terrain and more than 330 trails.  Ski valet and concierge services are available.

In addition, The Residences Viceroy Snowmass offers access to abundant resort amenities, including a wellness spa, fitness center, lobby boutique, kids’ club programs as well as meeting and event spaces.

For the foodies, the resort features the Slopeside Pool Terrace, Nest Lounge and Café, with a grill, sushi and vodka concept. Eight K Restaurant and Lounge features fine dining and entertainment.

In 2012, Snowmass Viceroy garnered the title of “the #1 resort in Aspen Snowass” by Condé Nast TRAVELER’s Readers’ Choice Award. Viceroy Snowmass is the first luxury Colorado property to be awarded LEED Gold certification.

Currently, Snowmass Viceroy is also ranked number 1 out of 17 resorts in Snowmass Village on Trip Advisor.

Units at The Residences are priced affordably — starting at $275,000 — and range from studios to four bedrooms with mountain views. Jean-Michel Gathy designed the residences, which feature finely crafted interiors and custom designed furnishings.

For Miamians who hanker for a luxury ski lifestyle in winter, a second residence in Colorado makes sense. Getting there isn’t hard, either — The Residences are just seven miles away from Aspen, where the Aspen/Pitkin County Airport is located.

Architect Zaha Hadid to Design Landmark Condo in Downtown Miami

zaha-hadid

Dame Zaha Hadid.

Award-winning architect Zaha Hadid is the brainchild behind Miami’s newest condo development facing Biscayne Bay in the downtown district. One Thousand Museum is so named because it will face Museum Park – a collection of the city’s premier art, cultural and science museums – which is currently under construction. The tower will be one of Miami’s tallest at 706 feet and employ an “exoskeleton” to avoid structural support columns within individual units.

Hadid was born in Iraq in 1950. She studied mathematics in the American University of Beirut and then continued her education at the Architectural Association School in London.

Her list of accomplishments is impressive: she is the first woman to have ever received the Pritzker Prize for architecture in 2004 and more recently, she garnered the Stirling Prize in 2010 and 2011. For her contributions to architecture, Hadid was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.  Her firm, Zaha Hadid Architects, is based in London.

Hadid’s style is futuristic and features curves as well as elongated forms. One Thousand Museum is Hadid’s first residential skyscraper in the western hemisphere, but her designs  have come to life all over the world – from the Guangzhou Opera House in China to the Bridge Pavillion in Zaragoza, Spain to the Bergisel Ski Jump in Innsbruck, Austria, among dozens of others.

The United States is graced by some of her other work, including the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum in Lansing, Michigan.

The multi-talented architect has also taken on luxe interior design and automobile work, including a sofa for B & B Italia and the Z.CAR, a hydrogen-powered, three-wheeled automobile.

One Sotheby’s International is the exclusive sales and marketing firm for One Thousand Museum. For more information about the project please visit www.1000museum.com or contact 1-855-ONE-MUSE (663-6873).

High Pines: Quiet Neighborhood Close to Urban Comforts

high-pines-home-miami

This High Pines home on prestigious School House Road was sold by One Sotheby’s agent Jose Luis Pere for $1,950,000.

Lush tropical landscapes and streets shaded by old growth trees characterize High Pines, a small neighborhood surrounded by South Miami, Coral Gables, the Ponce Davis area and nearby Pinecrest. Single-family homes are predominant here, with the recent addition of townhomes.

High Pines boasts quiet streets and a tree-lined promenade off of Red Road offering children and adults a safe place to jog and cycle.

High Pines is nestled in an area of Miami with rich history. Native Americans roamed the area, but in more recent times, W.A. Larkins built a farming community in the late 19th century along with a post office, general supply store and, eventually, a depot for the East Coast Railroad. School House Road at the eastern perimeter of High Pines is aptly named after one first school houses built in Miami.

After World War II, many veterans settled in the area to work for the now defunct Holsum Bakery. The scent of fresh bread permeated the neighborhood well into the 1980s.

Today, High Pines is an ideal community for professionals and families who enjoy nature in a pedestrian friendly community.  And it’s also convenient because of its proximity to a commercial district.

sunset-drive-miami-cafe

Sunset Drive’s commercial district in South Miami offers a home-town feel with excellent dining and shopping.

High Pines residents benefit from walking distance access to South Miami’s quaint downtown for many reasons: restaurants — ranging from affordable to gourmet fare — that offer a variety of international cuisines; ice cream, coffee shops and bakeries; bars and pubs; hair and nail salons; day spas; yoga and private fitness studios; specialty fashion and jewelry boutiques, including fine furnishings, linen, infant clothes as well as upscale consignment shops.

The area also features many conveniences such as pharmacies, banks, medical offices, pet shops, a post office, a hardware store and more. Markets abound, including a Whole Foods and a long-established fishmonger at Mariner’s Seafood. Sunset Place Mall features movies, bowling, a Barnes and Noble and other chain retail.

High Pines is also home to the historic Audobon House. Just minutes away are Dante Fascell Park, Pinecrest Gardens, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden and Matheson Hammock Park, which boasts beautiful views of Biscayne Bay. Top schools, both public and private, a private tennis club, a decades-old ballet school and places of worship also surround the neighborhood. The University of Miami is just across the main thoroughfare of US1 and is home to the Lowe Art Museum, which exhibits an impressive collection of permanent and visiting art work.

From March 4 through 12, Sotheby’s auction house in London presented an exhibit entitled At the Crossroads: Contemporary Art from the Caucasus and Central Asia. Works from the multi-cultural region of Central Asia included pieces by artists from countries such as Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Georgia — all republics between the Caucasus and Chinese borders. The region has been attracting the interest of contemporary art collectors.

The exhibit offered private sales and prices for the 47 works ranged from
US $3,000 to $500,000. A portrait of Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich by renowned Azeri artist Tair Salahkov garnered the highest price.

One Sotheby’s International agent Liza Lamar attended part of the event to represent South Florida during the opening festivities. “It was an incredible turnout,” she said. “Over 1,000 people attended the opening night cocktail party.”

“We were there with other Sotheby’s affiliates,” she continued. “New York, Moscow and San Francisco agents were part of this event. There was great interest from a younger audience with up-and-coming wealth.”

The Sony Open Tennis takes place in just a few weeks and is a reminder of South Florida’s love for the international tennis community.  The tournament is known as the “fifth slam” after Wimbledon, the U.S. Open, French Open and Australian Open.

Last year, the Sony Ericsson Open set an all-time attendance record for the fifth time in six years with 326,131 guests.  Visitors came from all over the world, booking more than 14,700 room nights directly through the tournament, which also received 73.5 hours of domestic television coverage.

2012 was a banner year for other reasons as well: the tournament rebranded as Sony Open Tennis; the Tennis Center at Crandon Park received a $1 million dollar renovation for the player areas inside the stadium; and a majority of local voters approved a referendum on the November 6 ballot that allowed for a $50 million renovation of the facilities funded by private money and tournament proceeds.

The 2013 edition of the tournament will take place March 18-31. Visit Sony Open for more information.

One Sotheby’s Janie Coffey Joins Board of Lotus House

lotus-house-thrift-shop

The thrift shop is just one aspect of operations for this Miami non-profit.

Janie Coffey, Director of Sales and Brand Experience at One Sotheby’s International, has recently become a board member of the Lotus House, a Miami-based non-profit that helps homeless women rebuild their lives.  The Lotus House is part of One Sotheby’s ONE for ONE fundraising initiative.

The Lotus House is more than just a temporary place to eat, sleep and shower.  The sanctuary, located in the impoverished community of Overtown, offers healthcare, counseling, fitness activities, education and other services that contribute to well-being and self-confidence.

Women who enter the program – some pregnant or with children — have suffered from domestic violence, poverty, disability and untreated medical or mental illness.

The home was named after the lotus flower, a symbol of compassion, hope and enlightenment.  True to its namesake, Lotus House “graduates” move on to support themselves and breakthrough to a better life.

“I was on the original board between 2005 and 2006,” said Coffey over a phone interview. “And I joined again in 2013.  I wanted to get more involved with the great things Lotus House is doing for women and children in need.”

The Lotus House operates a thrift shop, now managed by one of its graduates.  “I look forward to helping with that aspect of operations,” said Coffey.

Although the Lotus House benefits from an endowment fund established in 2007, the program needs continual support. “Daily operation and capital funds are critical,” noted Coffey.
