Art collectors and enthusiasts, along with a group of top South Florida real estate brokers gathered at the ONE CIFO Project in ONE Sotheby’s International Realty’s Miami Beach real estate office for an informal discussion on art collecting by advisors Sarah Jane Bruce and Flavia Masetto. Based in Los Angeles and Buenos Aires, Sarah Jane Bruce and Flavia Masetto both operate fine art services and have a joint art collaboration that includes some of the most important works in their respective hemispheres.

During the lecture they focused on the question, “Why Collect?” and offered a rare glimpse into the insider world of art collecting and tips on how to start a personal collection and continue to evolve it. They also touched upon what makes a sound art investment, and how fine art is the new asset class next to real estate and other acquisitions. One of the interesting points they discussed was what the role of emerging markets, specifically Latin America, means for the global art scene.

The Art Basel Effect on Miami

The first week of December heralds the winter holidays, but in tropical Miami it’s also the beginning of a cultural season that energizes South Florida. This year marked the 11th edition of Art Basel Miami, a sister fair to the contemporary art fair in Basel, Switerzland and the most prestigious art show in the Americas. The main event took place at the Miami Beach Convention Center but many satellite fairs across the Miami-Dade County kept local and visiting art lovers busy.

Sponsored by UBS, Art Basel Miami Beach – the main show at the convention center – attracted over 50,000 visitors. Over 130 museum and institution groups from around the world visited the fair, as well as renowned private collectors from the Americas, Europe and emerging markets. More than 250 leading galleries from 31 countries in North and Latin America, as well as Europe and Asia, presented high quality work from the 20th and 21st centuries.

THE ART BASEL EFFECT

During Art Basel Week, international art consultant Sebastien Laboureau of Moonstar, a group of wealth advisors for art collectors, spoke at the Overture Miami Contemporary Art Fair in Midtown.

Overture focused on Andy Warhol in its exhibit titled 100 Warhols, which featured an unprecedented grouping of the artist’s work, some never before seen in public.

Below are some highlights from Laboureau’s talk:

• Each year, America’s biggest art fair provides an estimated $500 million economic boost.

• More visitors fly to Miami on private jets for Art Basel than a Superbowl.

• Many of the world’s most respected art dealers put together exhibit galleries featuring artwork by over 2,000 renowned and cutting-edge artists.

• 24 satellite art fairs enhance the art immersion experience on Miami Beach and on the mainland.

• Year-round, over 2,270 art-related business employ over 8,300 people with a $1 billion impact in Miami Beach and surrounding areas.

• The Wynwood District is home to more than 30 galleries, including those founded by art collector pioneers Don and Mera Rubbell and the Margulies family. Wynwood is also known for its world-class street art.

• The Design District is a luxury lifestyle art and design hub; Luis Vuitton commissioned a work by street artist RETNA.  (See video here.)

The Miami Art Museum, scheduled to open its new home as the Perez Art Museum Miami in 2013 at downtown’s bay front Museum Park, will feature a pavilion by Basel-based Swiss architectural firm Hertzog & de Meuron, following the footsteps of other cities inspired by the success of the Guggenheim in Bilbao to attract tourism and fuel activity.

Laboureau’s enthusiasm about Miami as a cultural hub was clear and he emphasized the important of art for communities and businesses. “The arts are essential to the health and vitality of neighborhoods,” he mentioned in his presentation. “Art is equally useful to businesses and corporations, as it can transmit good values and enrich interactions.”

The breakfast presentation was hosted by The Beacon Council, Miami’s official economic development partnership.

Art Basel in South Florida takes place the first week of December and is the favorite winter meeting place for the international art world. To learn more about the 2013 edition, visit Art Basel Miami Beach.

Portugal Wines at the Rubell Family Art Collection

rubell-gallery-wine-tasting

On June 12, the world of art and wine came together at the Rubell Family Collection in Miami – an art gallery in the city’s revitalized Wynwood arts district.  In 1964, Donald and Mera Rubell established one of the world’s largest privately owned collections in New York City.  In 1993, the Rubells took over the 23,000 square-foot Miami building and a year later, they created the Contemporary Arts Foundation to support their public mission in art.

The space was a fitting location to examine the art of wine making. Wines of Portugal hosted the annual grand tasting, where guests sampled dozens of varieties and enjoyed a master class led by Wine Educator and Master Sommelier Emilio Guerra.

ONE | Sotheby’s was present to take notes.

Swept by Atlantic breezes on the west coast of the Iberian peninsula, the region known as Portugal today has been producing wines since 2000 BC.   Portugal is most famous for sweet Port, but in fact 50% of its production is dry wine, including sparkling.  With 250 grape varieties and numerous microclimates spanning 25 DOCs  – even off the mainland the Madeira and the Azores islands — Portugal is the 10th largest producer of wine in the world and 5th in Europe. The masterful blending of grapes is the focus of many wineries.

The Douro region in the northwest is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 1756, Douro became the first demarcated and regulated DOC in the world for its Port production.

wines-of-portugal-miamiPortuguese wines range from crisp and fruity whites to rich and earthy reds.

The Quinta de Aveleda Vinho Verde 2011, a combination of Loureiro and Alvarinho grapes, would make a great summer wine in Miami to accompany light meals.

The Quinta de Garrida 2008, made from Tinta Roriz and Touriga Nacional grapes — the latter being “the king of grapes,” according to Guerra — would pair well with aromatic dishes such as mushroom risotto.

No meal should end without a sip of Port.  Silky on the tongue and with a heady scent of raisin, the 2005 Barros LBV owes its flavor to Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesca and Tinta Roriz grapes.

Miami’s wine lovers needn’t travel across the Atlantic to savor Portugal’s wines.  Many of the wines sampled at the event are available at the following local retailers:  Stefano’s Key Biscayne, Best Time Wine Grove, Sunset Liquors, Big Daddy’s and more — ask your local wine dealer.

To learn more about the wines and the region’s rich history, visit Wines of Portugal.

The art space is accessible to the public. Summer hours are by appointment only. Visit the Rubell Family Collection for more details.

ONE | Sotheby’s Brings Couture and Art Together at Miami Beach International Fashion Week

Gorgeous gowns by Eduardo de Las Casas.

South Beach is on the cutting edge of not only high-rise architecture, but also fashion and art. Fashionistas from all over the world flock here each year in springtime for Miami Beach International Fashion Week — the largest international and Hispanic fashion event in the country.

This year, ONE | Sotheby’s hosted a private, sneak preview couture event in their South Beach office. Located in the quiet South of Fifth neighborhood, the 6,000 square foot workspace includes 2,000 square feet devoted to art exhibits — the fruit of the ONE CIFO project — a creative fundraising partnership between ONE | Sotheby’s and the Cisnero Fontanals Art Foundation, which supports emerging and mid-career artists from Latin America.

All the art pieces are available for purchase to benefit the foundation. Artwork featured in the past includes that of Cuban-born artist Glexis Novoa. Two of his graphite wall drawings are on permanent public display at the mouth of the Miami River, just a stone’s throw from South Beach — drawings which cross a most interesting line between art and architecture.

Last week, art wasn’t just hanging from walls, but from the shoulders of sexy, svelte figures. Deco Drive, Miami’s most popular see-and-be-seen TV show, was on the premises to shoot the models who sported designs by Eduardo de las Casas, a Peruvian designer inspired by old Hollywood glamour. Equally stunning gowns came from Ema Koja, the fashion star behind Ema Savahl designs. “The silhouettes are for amazing bodies, which we have in Miami,” Kojo said on tape.

And that’s also true of many bodies made of concrete, steel and glass that dot Miami’s extraordinary skyline.

Fashion week has ended, but beauty, art and fashion converge in South Florida year-round, especially on the cosmopolitan island of Miami Beach.
