Volvo Ocean Race Stopover in Miami

The prestigious Volvo Ocean Race is making its only North American stop in Miami this week until May 20. The six sailing teams, which will have endured eight grueling months of sailing against the elements by the time it’s all over, are scheduled to arrive today at Bicentennial Park for a pit stop.

The race began in Alicante (Spain) and has so far made stops in Cape Town (South Africa), Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), Sanya (China), Auckland (New Zealand) and Itajai (Brazil).

After Miami, the world-class sailboats, engineered for maximum speed, efficiency and safety, will cross the Atlantic for three additional stops:  Lisbon (Portugal), Cap L’Orient (France) and the final leg to Galway (Ireland).

Downtown Miami, already bursting with international culture, reflects this global journey in the Volvo Race Village, a fair celebrating the intrepid adventures and courage of the Volvo sailors with over 27 acres of entertainment, interactive pavilions, rides, 3D-cinema and high-class sailing action bordering Biscayne Bay, including a Pro-Am Regatta.

MORE THAN SAILING

Although the six professional race teams will compete for points toward the overall leader board during the In-Port Race, locals will also get to enjoy Biscayne Bay, one of Miami’s best natural and recreational resources.  The Downtown Miami Race Village has also partnered with local sailing associations to offer public sailing lessons. Other water sports include kite sailing, wake boarding, a canoe and paddle board race — all favorite activities for Miami’s water babies.

IF YOU GO

Puma and Camper are race sponsors, so if you’re in the market for fashionable sportswear and gear, plan on doing some shopping.

The fair is free and open daily to the public until May 20th.  Hours of operation are 10 am to 7 PM, Sunday through Thursday and 10 am to 10 PM, Friday through Saturday.  For more information, visit Volvo Ocean Race Miami.

The Scoop – Books and Bites

Who says books have gone the way of the horse and buggy? Proving the power of word on paper, Miami’s homegrown, independent Books & Books opened its 8th location. The Newsstand Café by Books & Books in downtown may be the chain’s tiniest, but it packs a punch with New York Times bestsellers, coffee table tomes and publications galore from glossy Vogue to literary quarterly Granta. A juice bar churns out healthy concoctions like the Apple Zinger with carrots and ginger, while bankers, lawyers and residents pop in for gourmet coffee and savory rolls by local purveyors Panther and Sushi Maki. Co-owner Mitchell Kaplan also swears his frozen yogurt licks Pinkberry’s.

Pedi Cabs, Water Taxis and Trolleys make it easier to get around Downtown Miami

Downtown Miami residents and visitors can breathe a sigh of relief because three new transportation services are now cutting their time spent sitting in traffic and looking for parking. Pedicabs, water Taxis and Trolleys are offering new alternatives to navigate and enjoy the best of what Miami has to offer.

Pedicabs are now the hottest rides cruising down Biscayne Boulevard. Spotted from Marlins Stadium and around Brickell and the American Airlines Arena, the colorful passenger carts are pulled by athletic chauffeurs who work on tips and know all the shortcuts to get around the area quickly. The pedicabs operate from Wednesdays through Sundays from non to 2:00am.

If you’re leaving the mainland and venturing towards the beach then do with style in a Water Taxi. These vessels offer hop-on, hop-off service, which make it the ideal mode of transportation for a day of sightseeing along Miami’s waterways. With seven convenient stops ( Bayside, Eden Roc, Finnegan’s on the River, Miami Yacht Club, Miami Beach Marina, River Walk Station and Sea Isle Marina) it’s a great way to take in Miami’s breathtaking views that are usually missed when on the road. A single trip is $12, a round-trip pass is $20 and an unlimited pass costs $30. The Water Taxis also offer private charters for large groups and private events. For more information visit: Water Taxi Miami

Recently inaugurated, the Miami Trolleys are making their way around the Health District and the Marlins Stadium. Starting in May a new route will include service in Brickell and Biscayne Boulevard spanning from the Financial District all the way to Margaret Pace Park (close to 17th Street and Biscayne Blvd.) The trolleys run about every 15 minutes with service beginning at 6:30am to 11pm on Mondays through Saturdays, and to make it even better, the ride is always FREE! Miami Checks-In to Celebrate Foursquare Day!

April 16th was the official Foursquare Day throughout the globe! In Miami, the social media movers and shakers participated in several events throughout the city, while they checked in, earned badges and mingled with friends.

The day kicked off with a breakfast at Miami’s historic bar, Tobacco Road, where a panel of experts led a Q&A session on the best practices for using Foursquare. They gave tips on how to use it for business and how to explore your community by checking-in. A representative from the City of Miami was present and officially declared it Foursquare Day!

City of Miami officially Proclaimed April 16th as Foursquare Day!

In the afternoon guests gathered at Balans on Lincoln Road to talk social media and sip delicious mojitos and refreshing cocktails. Everyone enjoyed Foursquare Day Happy Hour specials.

The group then moved on to Jimmy’Z Kitchen in Wynwood for delicious Foursquare Day dinner specials. For every check-in each patron received a complimentary dessert and coffee as well as special prices on a large craft beer selection.

Overall, Foursquare Day was a wonderful time to share with Miami’s social media community and prove that our city is certainly at the forefront of technology and networking. See you next time mayors!

Foursquare Day (4×4= April 16th) began in 2010 by a group of fans in Tampa Bay and quickly spread through social media communities through the United States and the World.

Croquet and Cocktails on Biscayne Bay

The Flagler Street Society presented one of its annual fundraisers, Croquet and Cocktails, this past Sunday on Brickell Key at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. About 100 members comprise the group of young professionals ages 21-45 who support South Florida’s largest history museum, History Miami.

On Sunday, however, museum enthusiasts of all ages attended the event, where guests tried their hand at croquet while mingling on the commons and enjoying refreshing cocktails.  Although croquet may be associated with a more genteel culture, on Sunday it was played in true Miami style — elegant yet casual under the palm trees.

History Miami is at the heart of the city — an honest gem among the hype. A premier research facility, the museum is a repository of artifacts, photographs, documents, publications and oral histories. Located in downtown Miami’s cultural plaza, next to the Miami Art Museum and the main branch of the Miami-Dade County Library, the museum boasts a permanent exhibit on the natural and cultural history of the area, as well as curated yearly exhibits focusing on South Florida. Adult programs include neighborhood tours and lectures. Children can enjoy an array of activities from field trips to summer camps.

ONE | Sotheby’s spoke with a former board member who was volunteering at Croquet and Cocktails. “It’s fun being a grandparent and bringing the kids to the museum,” she said. “Children love seeing all those things. Getting involved with the museum is a great way to get involved with the community.”

For anyone new to South Florida, a visit to History Miami is worthwhile to learn about the area’s rich history.  Evidence of human habitation along the banks of the Miami River dates back to over two-thousand years. The Miami Circle park project, which is part of History Miami, pays tribute to the Tequesta Indians who lived where towering luxury condominiums and hotels stake claim to land today.

It may be a museum, but History Miami is far from stuffy. The Flagler Street Society hosts monthly Wine Down Wednesdays, where local professionals gather for happy hour and to peruse exhibits after closing time. Music, wine and light bites make for one of downtown Miami’s best regular cultural affairs — a most accessible and enjoyable form of philanthropy for a local institution.

Reasonable yearly museum membership rates include free admission, discounts to special events and tours as well as reciprocal benefits with other museums.

To learn more about the museum, visit History Miami and to join the support group, visit Flagler Street Society.

Taj Miami – A Rare Cultural Jewel in the Heart of Brickell

taj-miami-solarium

They say those who live in glass houses should not throw stones, but who has actually lived in a glass house as fabulous as this one? You’d never throw anything here, except perhaps a glance to amazing vistas of Miami and Biscayne Bay from your patio in the heavens.

One of Miami’s most unique properties, this three-story glass house, perched atop the Palace Condominium on Brickell Avenue, has a quirky cultural history. In 1981, Leona and Harry Helmsley were about to call this their sky residence when Saudi Sheik Saoud Al-Shaalan purchased the property and converted the already stunning structure to a Mughal Palace.

Twenty-seven Moroccan craftsman and two years later, the interior of this 40 foot-high glass cube became nothing short of a wondrous historical enclave amid the contemporary towering high-rises of Brickell Avenue – traces of Persian, Turkish and Indian architecture inform the interior.

taj-miami-grand-salon

Unfortunately, the Sheik rarely visited this work of art he could have called home, but in 1999 international real estate developer antique weapons expert Anthony Tirri purchased the glass house, adorning it with Muslim weapons, furniture and art. Mr. Tirri has since moved on to Paris, where he has remodeled an 1135 chateau named after renowned French author Alexander Dumas.

This grand residence now awaits a new homeowner who would relish in one of Miami’s most lavish and culturally inspired properties.

Eccentric, to be sure, but it’s not the first time visionaries have created what may seem outlandish here in the tropics.  In 1925, millionaire publisher Randolph William Hearst had an entire 12th century Spanish monastery delivered stone by stone to the United States, which you can now see, fully reconstructed, in North Miami.  And from 1923-1951, a man named Ed, obsessed with unrequited love, carved a castle from 1,100 tons of coral rock in south Miami-Dade, all in tribute to his distant paramour.

Great things have been built in the name of love and the analogy is not lost at Taj Miami – after all, its inspiration, the Taj Majal in India, was built entirely of white marble by 17th century Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved Queen Mumtaz Mahal.

taj-miami-salon

Romance of life, love and architecture is alive and well in this property, gleaned in the exquisite details of the mosaic tile, carving and plaster work throughout the space. Soaring above one of Miami’s most dynamic and historic neighborhoods, the Taj Miami soaks in sunrises and sunsets with a cross-cultural touch.

ONE | Sotheby’s Publishes TRENDS 2011 Year In Review

ONE | Sotheby’s has published the 2011 Year in Review edition of TRENDS, which covers every area in South Florida and gives an overview of what happened in each market. From Coral Gables to Fort Lauderdale, TRENDS provides an in depth analysis of sales prices and transactions for both single family homes and condos.

By the end of 2011, Miami made it to the Top 10 Recovery list and now leads other cities as the market continues to shift from balanced inventory to a shortage. The ultra luxury section experiences especially high activity and ONE | Sotheby’s was involved in 3 of 4 sales closed over $20million.

Key observations in TRENDS show that prices are steadily increasing and some micro markets have seen a rise of over 40% compared to the same time in 2010. In Miami-Dade the price per square foot is up 14% and in Broward 3%, signaling a strong real estate recovery even with a lagging economy. The numbers also reflect the heavy influence of foreign and international investments.
